alf burdett

Alf Burdett started as a messenger boy, and in 1925 was a sorter at the Inland Section at Mount Pleasant. That year, aged 18, he won the Open 10-stone Chest Expander Championship with a record pull of 340lbs. He became a Danks Gold Medallist and photos of him were used by the GPO to show what the postal system could produce.

In the 1930s Burdett was one of the strongest forces behind the scenes in the formation of Mount Pleasant Physical Culture Club. At a Mount Pleasant Physical Culture Club display he twisted strips of iron round and round his biceps and tossed the bouncing coils onto the stage for others to try their luck straightening.
