The History of the Post Office is primarily a story about
people. There are, of course, many key
figures in this History. An obvious one
is Rowland Hill, the founder of penny postage.
Other key figures include Henry and Millicent Fawcett, Tony Benn and
Stephen Tallents. It is also, however,
the story of ordinary people.
As one of the biggest employers in the country, the Royal
Mail’s History is, to some extent, synonymous with Britain’s social history. The story embraces the story of trade unionism,
of women’s employment and of social life in the work place.
