The fantastic collages in this slideshow were produce by the 400 children who took part in The Penny Black Changed the World art workshops in summer term 2006.

The collages are based on two stamp designs: one is the Penny Black (on the left, below), the world's first ever postage stamp. It has the head of Queen Victoria. The other design (on the right) shows her husband, Prince Albert. This design was never actually made into a proper stamp, but was created to show what it might look like.

In the collages, the head of Prince Albert is facing to the right. In the original design, he is facing to the left, just like Victoria. All head of kings and queens on stamps face to the left, ever since the Penny Black.

Click on any of the pictures below to see a bigger version of that collage. You can also move through the slideshow by using the buttons at the top and bottom of the page. There is a Victoria design and an Albert design on each slide, so scroll down to see both of them.
