Open days
The year began with the popular open afternoons. Our Museum Store was opened up on the first Wednesday of the month between March and November.
These and the three open evenings that also took place, consisted of curator-led tours of
- the vehicles
- letter boxes
- other parts of the BPMA collections
Groups were also able to book private tours on dates convenient to them throughout the year.
Discovery sessions
These tours were supplemented by three Discovery Sessions. These looked at specific areas of the collection in more detail. Sessions were held on:
- Letter boxes
- the Royal Device
- GPO Street Furniture
They included presentations showing original material from the archive, as well as the chance to handle objects from the collection relating to these subjects.
These were a new type of event held by the BPMA and seemed to be enjoyed thoroughly by all that attended.
Family open days
July saw two consecutive family open days held at the Museum Store. The two days included numerous activities for children organised by the Access & Learning Team (now Access & Development), plus talks and tours on specific areas of the collection by BPMA curators.
These days were enjoyed immensely by young and old from all over the country.
Walking tours
Also held for the first time were two walking tours of GPO London, devised and led by BPMA curators. These were hugely popular and booked out early with long waiting lists each time.
These tours took attendees through a journey of GPO London, exploring
- Post Office buildings
- letter boxes
- telephone kiosks
...and covering over 100 years of history.
Events next year
We hope to repeat many of these events next year as well as holding some new events. If you are interested, please see the BPMA Events Guide, which will be available in the next few months. The What's On section on this website will also be up dated once the Events Guide is complete.
