Curator Chris Taft, and Curatorial Cataloguer and IT Officer Sian Woodward attended the talks, seminars and events that made up the conference, against the backdrop of the city and museums of Glasgow. Themes at this year’s conference included
- collections-related knowledge
- increasing visitor numbers
- measuring value
- the future of museums
Chris and Sian were able to benefit from the shared experiences of the speakers and attendees, as well as contributing their own experiences of projects at the BPMA to group discussion and debate.
As well as a wide-ranging programme of talks and discussions, there was the chance to visit some of Glasgow’s museums. These included the recently renewed and restored Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum and the Museum of Transport.
We had a study tour around the new Glasgow Museums Resource Centre. This revealed the experiences of opening a purpose-built museum store to visitors, and the challenges and opportunities this has presented.
The conference was also a good chance to raise the profile of the BPMA amongst fellow professionals, creating potential contacts and interest for future projects and partnerships. The thought-provoking conference sessions and discussions with other professionals will no doubt encourage a fresh look at what we do at the BPMA.
