The Penny Black Changed The World

Penny Black art workshop

Penny Black art workshop

In 2005 the BPMA received a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund to digitise and increase access to the world-renowned Victorian stamp collection of Reginald M. Phillips. This collection tells the story of the development of the postage stamp in the 19th Century, and as a result of the project is now available online.

The Penny Black Changed the World project also involved production of a learning pack for teaching Victorian History at Key Stage 2 – copies of which are available to download or order in hard copy from the Learning Packs section of this website.

BPMA Learning Officers also visited local schools, running art and history workshops for more than 400 students during the summer term of 2006.

To find out more about the project, read the full Penny Black Project Report (PDF, 1MB).
