Lake District

The Lake District has rock formations dating back nearly 500 million years! People have inhabited the region since the end of the last ice age and there are over 6000 known archaeological sites.

Over time the region has experienced vastly different types of environments - from kilometre-thick ice sheets to tropical seas - and it is this that has shaped the Lake District into what it is today. The longest lake is Windermere at 10.5 miles long and the deepest is Wast Water which reaches depths of 74 metres. The Lake District National Park has over fourteen lakes; however Bassenthwaite Lake is the only one that actually has the word 'lake' in the title.

Being a place of natural beauty, the lakes are thought to have inspired many of our most celebrated literary figures over the years including Wordsworth, Tennyson and Keats, just to name a few.

The stamp below, issued in February 2006, formed part of the British Journey: England series.
