Origin of Species

Charles Darwin's The Origin of Species was first published in 1859.

At the time, his theory on evolution through the process of natural selection was revolutionary. It also proved to be quite controversial in religious circles where more traditional beliefs of creationism were upheld.

On the day of its release, all 1250 copies of the book were sold, proving that there was a great deal of interest in Darwin's work.

The stamp below was issued as part of a series in February 1982 released to mark the Death Centenary of Charles Darwin.
