Pride and Prejudice

Pride And Prejudice is possibly the most famous of all Jane Austen's novels. Still as popular as ever, the story has been read by millions and shown on the big screen many times over.

In the 1995 BBC TV adaptation of the novel, actor Colin Firth caused quite a stir when he brought the distinguished Mr Darcy to life. In fact, his performance practically turned the character into an iconic figure in his own right.

Quite amazingly Austen began writing the book at just 21 years of age - a big achievement for such a young woman.

In October 1975 the stamp below was issued as part of a series marking the 200th anniversary of Jane Austen's birth.
