Family Event: Family Learning in the Archive
Hear this page read aloud
Saturday 14 June 2008

The Royal Mail Archive holds over 2.5 miles of records, but how do you go about finding all the interesting stuff in an archive? We have everything from royal charters, uniforms and letterboxes to films, stamps and posters,
representing four centuries of social, postal and design history.
At the Family Learning Open Day we'll help you get started using original historical records and show you some of the treasures in our wonderful collection. There'll be behind-the-scenes tours, quizzes and art and learning activities for children and adults to do together.
How much do you think a cat should earn for stopping mice munching the mail? ... Did a horse need a sick note when it couldn't pull the mail coach? ... How did the Post Office help to catch spies? ... Could you design a propaganda envelope? ... Could you send a coded telegraph message or spot a forged stamp? ... Do you know how the image of the Queen's head on British stamps was made? ... Do you have an ancestor who worked for the Post Office, what did they do and what did they wear?
There's so much to discover at the BPMA, this will be just a start, but it could be the first step towards an exciting new interest for the whole family.
