Tuesday 2 December 2008

Image of two mail rail cars in a tunnelThis 1987 film shows the unique Post Office Underground Railway (Mail Rail) transporting the mail across the capital, some 70 feet below London's busy streets.

Mail Rail opened in 1927 and was in use for over seventy-five years. The automatically operated trains carried one third of London's letters and parcels, and the system operated for nineteen hours a day. Mail Rail as a service was 'mothballed' in 2003, but the Mount Pleasant station still exists 70 feet below the lecture venue!

Running time: 10 minutes
