Talk: The Travelling Post Office
Hear this page read aloud
Thursday 3 April 2008
Alex Obradovic, a former head of the TPO network, looks back at the early days of the
TPOs to explore some of the lesser
known features and human themes
behind the celebrated history of
this fascinating part of the mail
system.
The Post Office originally used the public railway service to transport mail coaches, until a horse box was converted to accommodate the sorting of mail in January 1838. By September the same year carriages were introduced with facilities for sorting mail on board and fitted with a special apparatus for delivering and collecting pouches of mail while moving at high speed.
The Travelling Post Office (TPO) service lasted for 166 years, until it came to an end in 2004.
